California poppy is native to western North America and belongs to the Papaveraceae or poppy plant family. It’s the state flower of California but grows in many other U.S. states, including Arizona, as well as in Northern Mexico. California poppy also grows wild in hot, dry places in NZ.
Californian poppy relaxes the nervous system supporting sleep by reducing restlessness anxiety and stress. In the book Herbal Medicine (1988) R. Weiss considers its action as gentle and useful as an aid to "establishing equilibrium and it is not a narcotic". It may be helpful in neuropathy.
In the respiratory system it can help to relax the airways making it a remedy to soothe a tight chest, especially at night time.
California poppy may also be used to reduce enuresis or bed wetting.
