Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, commonly known as bearberry, has a long history or medicinal use mainly as an astringent and haemostatic herb. It has been approved by the German Commission E for the management of urinary tract infections and inflammation of the bladder. It can be considered to exert a urinary antiseptic due to the action of arbutin.
Bearberry may be useful in reducing the frequency of cystitis and other infections of the urinary system, including prostatitis.
Bearberry, containing tannins, may be useful in the digestive tract to manage diarrhea and bleeding.
In the event of an ACUTE INFECTION PLEASE consult your healthcare practitioner immediately.
The British Herbal Compendium BHC recommends SHORT TERM use only and advises you to seek a professional consultation if taking bearberry longterm.
Please consult your medical care provider before using any herbal medicine, particularly if you have a sensitivity or allergy to the herb, a known medical condition, are taking medication or if you are pregnant or nursing.
