Cascara sagrada - Rhamnus pershiana or californian buckthorn is a North American tree of which the bark is used medicinally. Cascara has long been known as a purgative tea containing hydroxyanthraquinone glycosides that bacterial flora can utilize to stimulate colon motility and increase the water content of the stool. It is considered a gentle stimulating laxative and is best used short term.
